You have found me! I am a Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist with over 20 years of continuous specialist cardiology and tertiary-level cardiac surgical hospital experience.
I completed an Otago MBChB (with intercalated BMedSc in Bioethics/Philosophy), then Cardiology Advanced training in Gold Coast Hospital 2002, the Prince Charles Hospital 2003–4 for FRACP and FCSANZ. I was then Staff Specialist at Gold Coast Hospital 2005 prior to completion of an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship with high volumes of angioplasty, structural heart procedures and rigourous didactic academic/research training with Professor Samin Sharma and Valentine Fuster at The Mount Sinai Hospital and School of Medicine 2005–6.
Prior to coming back to the Gold Coast I enjoyed my time and experiences as Senior Clinical Lecturer and Interventional Cardiologist Dunedin Hospital, University of Otago 2006– 2013, an academic setting with hub tertiary capabilities including an experienced cardiac surgery service. I served as Director of Physician Training for the RACP, while focussing during this period on optimal management of STEMI heart attack emergencies, then-evolving aspects of streamlining a 24/7/365 emergency angioplasty service, emergent/early transfer from nearby rural hospitals, trans-radial artery (wrist) access, pioneering strategies for multivessel coronary intervention with documented optimal outcomes, investigator involvement in global multi-centre drug and novel coronary device randomised trials/registries with interval angiographic and intravascular ("first-in-man" IVUS) imaging followup.
Along with clinical practice currently credentialed at all private and public Gold Coast Hospitals, I contribute to the Queensland Ambulance Service/GCUH on-call emergency roster for ST elevation myocardial infarction ("heart attack" emergency angioplasty), 275+ logged STEMI cases, 250+ logged NSTEMI cases since 2014; I have a career volume of 2100+ coronary intervention cases as a consultant interventional cardiologist (substantially acute coronary syndrome); on top of 800+ prior cases as a fellow in training). Together with my good friend and colleague Dr Paul Klaassen, we can provide timely clinic assessment, testing and inpatient care 24/7 for all urgent cardiology; especially suspected/proven acute coronary syndromes. We work from multiple clinic and hospital locations from Brisbane to the Gold Coast.
Whether Medicare or privately insured we have a philosophy of accessible, affordable and appropriate care; consistent clinical excellence and integrity; emphases on preventative care, continuity of aftercare; no gap or out of pocket expenses; adherence to evidence-based best practice; and leading the field in contemporary knowledge, skills, experience, and published benchmarked outcomes.
